Florence is a universal capital of the soul; it is a solid figuration of utopia, a still-viable model of quality, beauty, and harmonious relations between man, his memory of the past and the present environment in which he lives. Florence is a paragon, rendered more desirable and even indispensible by the contemporary setting of historical meltdown, desublimation, general vileness and ecological conflict.
And precisely because of this image, everything of importance that happens in Florence, for better or for worse, has greater significance and resonance than if it happened elsewhere.
